The Culinary Universe of New Providence Island
In addition to interesting activities and beautiful sights, food is an important aspect of your vacation. While most people will be convinced about the excitement and panoramic beauty of a New Providence holiday, it is perhaps a good idea to explore the island's culinary side.
Since you're in the Bahamas, you're very likely to want to try some traditional Bahamian meals. As its name suggests, the Bahamian Kitchen in Nassau, next to Trinity Church, serves Bahamian fares. The traditional johnnycake will accompany such menu items as stewed fish, curried chicken, okra soup, fried red snapper, and so on. You can also order take-out here. The place is open every day between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Chez Willie on West Bay Street is for those of you who like grand style dining. Serving exquisite French and Bahamian cuisine, this very elegant restaurant has a dress code. Seafood seasoned with fresh herbs, lobster thermidor, beef Wellington, and grouper in puff pastry with crabmeat are among the highlights of the menu. Open daily between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., it attracts a lot of diners, so it will be virtually impossible to find a free table without a reservation.
Gaylord's on Dowdeswell Street in Nassau offers a complete range of North Indian fares, including Punjabi and tandoori dishes, kormas, curries, and quite a wide selection of vegetarian dishes. If you're planning a trip to India, this is a good place to become initiated into the culinary traditions there. The restaurant is open daily from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., with an additional three hours from Monday to Friday, between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
On Mackey Street in Nassau, you'll find the Double Dragon Restaurant, with Cantonese and Szechwan dishes at very fair prices. The seafood here is everyone favourite, especially the orange flavoured shrimp. The place is open between 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. from Monday to Friday, between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday, and between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday.
The Europe is one of the few places in the Bahamas where you'll find delicious German cuisine, along with various other international dishes. Among the traditional German fares you can order here, we could mention the pepper steak cognac, bratwurst, sauerbraten, and Wiener schnitzel. The delicious classic German chocolate cake is a recommended dessert. You can eat here from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 11 p.m.
The name Capriccio suggests two things: Italian and exquisite. Both descriptions are accurate. This restaurant on West Bay Street in Nassau serves savoury Italian dishes such as pasta with pesto sauce, chicken breast with a sage and wine sauce, as well as a broad selection of seafood. It is open from Monday to Saturday between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. and on Sundays between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. It is a good idea to make reservations before coming.
Bringing together the world's major cuisines in the wonderful Bahamian setting, New Providence Island is likely to delight you with its restaurants, which will make you postpone any diet plans you might have had before coming here.
