Hydrotherapy Can Wash Away The Pain

Using water to treat many medical conditions, hydrotherapy has been around for thousands of years. The Japanese, Chinese, Romans all used hydrotherapy on a regular basis. Father Sebastian Kneipp, a Bavarian monk, brought hydrotherapy into popularity in the 19th century. We can find modern use of hydrotherapy in the forms of baths, saunas, wraps and packs.

Typically used to improve muscle tone, hydrotherapy can help with digestive and intestinal processes, circulation, immune system, and pain relief. With its ability to relieve stress, it not only helps external parts but also soothes major organs and the nervous system. Several techniques are available. For invigoration and toning, you can use cold rubbing. Soak a cloth in cold water, ring it out, and rub the entire body. Afterward, go to bed until your body is warm and dry.

Using a hose or showerhead type fixture, you can create a body douche. Making sure the water does not splash the skin, you aim the flow of water toward the heart. After you have completed the douche, shake off excess water, get dressed, and work out. Depending on your need, you can use one of several types of douche. For headaches, blood pressure, sleep issues, bruising or varicose veins, you will use a knee douche. This has the water moving from the toes to the knee, back to the sold of the foot, and repeated on the other leg.

To add the benefit of improved circulation, continue upwards with a thigh douche. Start just like the knee douche but allow the water to move to the upper thigh. To help with inflammation of major organs or gall stones/kidney stones, keep moving up to the lower trunk of the body. To relieve anxiety, rheumatism, heart difficulties, and headaches, you can perform an arm douche. The pattern of water should flow from the outside of the hand to the shoulder and back down on the inside of the arm. Repeat on the other arm. From the arm douche, you can continue to an upper trunk douche by allowing the water to flow on to the chest, helping to relieve lung/throat problems and to stimulate the cardiovascular system. For headaches, eye problems, and toothaches, use a face douche. For the face douche, being at the temples and move in toward the chin, slowly continuing to the left temple and forehead. Finish by circling around the face.

Steam baths are another form of hydrotherapy. Avoiding overheating, stay only for 15 to 20 minutes per session in the steam bath. This therapy will help with circulation, heart rate, hormone production, air flow, immune system, relaxation, and depression.

Other forms include full or partial immersion baths. Standing in a tub with rising hot water, pain associated with colds and back pain will be alleviated. The water level should start at the foot and finish at the navel with the highest temperature reaching 103 degrees. Placing both feet in a cold-water bath up to the calf, you can alleviate varicose veins, headaches, circulation problems, and sleep problems. Keep the feet in the bath until the water does not feel cold. Wiping off the extra water, you should then walk or run until they are completely dry.

Finally, the wrap is a useful hydrotherapy for fever and inflammation. Soaking cloth in cold water and ringing it out, tightly wrap the ill body part without constricting it. On top of the cold wrap, place a dry linen wrap and relax for an hour. If within fifteen minutes the wrap does not feel warm, add a hot water bottle. Remove the wrap if at any time the person begins feeling ill.
