Irie! Dining in Jamaica

It is not just Jamaican music that is renowned worldwide, it's also the cuisine. You might be familiar with the delectable specialties of the island from the Jamaican restaurants in your country - but imagine the wonderful culinary experience of trying those dishes in their place of origin! In addition to traditional food, you'll also find many restaurants featuring international fares, so your choice is not restricted in any way.

If you are familiar with the island's traditional dining favourites, Jamaican jerk cuisine is probably the one that will come to your mind first. You'll find delicious examples of it at the Ocho Rios Village Jerk Center. With jerk chicken, seafood and pork on the menu, this DaCosta Drive establishment will attract a lot of diners at lunchtime, especially on those days when cruise ships dock.

The Almond Tree, at 83 Main Street in Ocho Rios, will also be crowded with people drawn by its Jamaican and international dishes and fair prices. You should make reservations if you intend to dine here.

The Native, at 29 Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay, will let you contemplate the avenue from its outdoor patio. Contrary to what the name might suggest, you'll have a much broader choice than just traditional Jamaican dishes, though the latter are definitely worth trying. If you find it difficult to settle for one particular dish, you can opt for an excellent sample platter. On Friday and Sunday there are buffet-style meals and there's live music on weekend nights. All these features make this restaurant a dining favourite, so it is wise to make reservations.

If you're in for a cultural feast as well, all you have to do is dress up and drive to Gordon Town Road in Gordon Town. You'll get to a place that was once a coffee plantation and now houses the Blue Mountain Inn. The restaurant's Colonial English atmosphere will enhance your enjoyment of the Continental cuisine. The restaurant is open every day except Sundays and reservations are necessary.

Another place you should definitely try is Kuyaba On The Beach in Negril, on Norman Manley Blvd. They have an irresistible array of international dishes, of which we could mention the excellent curries, pasta dishes, and tasty seafood. Its thatched roof makes it easy to find - or you could just follow the people on the street, who will probably be heading there as well. Both locals and tourists will seek the place for its cheerful and relaxed atmosphere.

It is certain that dining in Jamaica will be a wonderful culinary adventure. If you have cooking ambitions yourself, it's a good idea to try some of the smaller establishments, where you might get recipe tips and recommendations as to where you can find the best ingredients. When you return from the holiday, you'll be able to amaze your friends with the new dishes you can cook.
