Fisherman's Jamaica
Reggae music, sunny beaches, cave exploration... Jamaica is a packed with possible vacation activities. But what about fishing? With its ideal fishing spots, the island has gained worldwide fame as a fishing destination. There are plenty of fishing trips available, but, since fishing is also one of the main occupations of the Jamaicans, it is possible to inquire and find out about the less frequented spots - less visited by tourists, that is.
For charters, you can try Suzie-Q Deep Sea Fishing Charters, out of Falmouth, close to Montego Bay. This establishment offers eight-hour and four-hour charters for groups up to twelve people. If you're among the first eight people, the 4-hour charter will cost you $500 and the 8-hour one, $900. The rest of the participants, up to a total of 14, will be charged an extra $30. You'll be fishing in waters inhabited by such fishes as the blue marlin, white marlin, mahi mahi, wahoo, black-finned tuna, yellow-finned tuna, kingfish, and other species.
Jamaica Deep Sea Adventures, residing at the Port Antonio marina, is well known for the high-quality equipment it puts at the fishers' disposal. You can even get a chair specially designed for those situations when you're trying to pull a large fish into the boat. Barracuda, tuna, and marlin are among the species found in the salt waters where you will be fishing.
The No Problem Fishing Charters is another option you have. Half-day charters are offered for $360 and full-day charters for $690. Other charter providers in Montego Bay are Pier One Marina, and North Coast Marine Charters, both offering fishing trips.
For families, one of the best choices is Salty Angler Fishing Charters, also in Montego Bay. Your children will not only be welcome, but they can even learn to fish, as there are lessons for the little fishers. Since your children's environmental awareness is important, this is a catch-and-release fishing trip, so you won't be able to cook what you catch. But they make up for that by offering a wide range of options, such as open water fishing, coastal fishing, night fishing, and so on.
For a more genuine experience, you can try to arrange a fishing trip with a local. This is possible at the Lost Beach Resort in Negril. It will be a unique experience from both the fishing and the cultural point of view. Imagine yourself in a wooden skiff, fishing by line or by pot...
You can also inquire at the hotels, because they can help you make arrangements for your fishing trip. You'll find out, for instance, what you need to do to charter or rent small wooden boats for hand-line fishing near Tresure Beach and Port Antonio.
Whatever fishing option you choose, you are certain to enjoy the experience in the well known laid-back atmosphere of the island. Whether you know all about the different species of fish in those waters or you're just looking for an opportunity to sail and meditate, Jamaica's fishing trips will be a delight.
