Jamaica - More Than a Tourist Attraction
As many people believe, the commercialization of the Jamaican culture going hand in hand with the installations of the tourist industry make it hard to find the 'real' Jamaica, its people and its culture beyond the tourist centers. So people started creating possibilities to find a way back to the true heart of Jamaica, to see people and their life, which not are part of the usually clichéd idea of Jamaica that most visitors have.
One of these projects is the Meet The People Program. It is organized by the Jamaican Tourist Board and works in cooperation with more than 500 local participants. These local volunteers have different socio-economic backgrounds, interests and skills, which are listed in a database. The next step is that the tourists, who want to take part in the project, give the same sorts of information, and then locals and tourists are matched up. And most surprising, this is a free program; it gives you the chance for interesting, non-typical experiences and an incomparable social and cultural exchange. There are social activities such as family style meals in the local host's home, and the matched groups can discover their shared interests in Jamaica.
A resembling program is Country Style; it as well brings tourists and residents together to allow for a communication which is more natural than it would be in the tourist scene. Of course you can get much more out of a meeting with somebody who is interested in you as well than with someone who gets paid for looking after your comfort. The base for these meetings is Mandeville, Jamaica, interested and interesting residents come here from all over the island.
A man whose family has been in Jamaica for generations is the initiator of Jamaica For Real. This Oliver Foot is the son of the last British governor to rule Jamaica. His interest is to realize tours, which show Jamaica as genuine as possible. He wants to let other people take part in his love for Jamaica, which goes beyond the tropical pleasures of the island, the stunning array of creature comforts, entertainment and its magnificent beauty.
With his Jamaica For Real tours, Foot brings the visitors to historical places where during the social struggles against oppression the actual culture of Jamaica was born. One of these places is the Borderline, which during the social conflicts in the 1980's was an extremely electric area between two politicized neighborhoods. Another destination is Trenchtown, where poverty is one of the greatest problems. The desperate situation of the people, who live there gets expressed in the meanwhile all over the world known reggae music. These tours are supposed to give an understanding of the beauty of the countryside, its people and their ordinary life.
With getting to know local people and their daily life you'll gain an incomparable insight into Jamaica. These tours open up a completely different perspective on Jamaica and will make the island even more special and valuable for you.
