Protection and Preservation of Jamaica's Natural Beauty

One of the most remarkable of Jamaica's features is its natural beauty. Thanks to the foresight of Jamaicans and other people all over the world the preservation and protection of big parts of the flora and fauna got initiated and today wide areas belong to parks and reserves. There are still pristine and wild regions, to which the tourism industry and local development haven't got through.

Most famous among the islands national parks and reserves is the Blue Mountains National Park, which stretches across an area of almost 200,000 acres. It holds the most beautiful scenery of the whole country as well as the largest remaining rain forest of Jamaica. In the park grow more than one-third of all plants, which bring out flowers. The peak of the mountain chain goes up to 7,402 feet and the nearby John Crow Mountains are not only unique in Jamaica, but as well in the whole world. 28 different types of birds live in the forests of the park, which serve as well as migration stop for another 150 species of birds on their journey. The favorite activities here are those, which allow for close contact with the beautiful environment, such as hiking or camping.

Swaby's Swamp Safari can be found in Falmouth, Jamaica. They offer tours to a four-acre mangrove swamp, where tourists can view the wetlands wildlife. One of the attractions on these tours are the several types of crocodiles which have their home in Jamaica. Cashoo Ostrich Park is two in one, a nature reserve and a working farm. There are hundreds of ostriches as well as hiking paths and fruit orchards. The ostriches are very popular among children and adults alike, and to see these huge and magnificent creatures from a close distance is an impressive experience.

Another interesting nature reserve is Montego Bay Marine Park. It provides an insight into the fascinating underwater-world around Jamaica; sharks, several species of stingrays, moray eels, and numerous other types of fish can be watched here. But also coral reef formations and shady areas of mangrove trees, which function as home to a wide range of wildlife can be admired. The possibility of excellent scuba diving and snorkeling attract many people to pay a visit to this park and reserve.

The Royal Palm reserve can be found in the Great Morass swamplands. These are 7,000 acres of wetlands with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Visitors can watch crocodiles as well as many different kinds of birds like for instance herons and egrets, which live among the mangrove trees. Besides the Royal Palm reserve the Negril Watershed Environmental Protection area is another nature reserve in the Great Morass; its aim is tropical preservation and protection.

Whereas in the 1800's the Marshall's Pen was a plantation, it is a bird's sanctuary today. Visitors can choose for group tours or average day tours, on which they are able to watch many of the native Jamaican birds and as well birds from migrating flocks, which stop by on Jamaica.

Even though Jamaica as a vacation destination is mainly known for the traditional joys of sun, sand and surf and luxurious resorts and hotels, there is still a lot more it has to offer. There are places which surprise with their naturalness and beauty, mostly in the numerous parks and reserves, where an unspoiled Jamaican fauna and flora can be experienced.
