Visit Jamaica

Some years ago, it wasn't very easy for vegetarian vacationers to find restaurants catering to their culinary needs. Looking for a place to eat was a much more complex quest than for the regular meat-eating traveler. Lately, however, vegetarianism is gaining ground, so restaurants worldwide - thus also in popular destinations - have every reason to design menus that will attract vegetarians. And since the world is on its way to becoming a global village, the diners' choice is practically unlimited: not only is it easier to find a restaurant serving a particular cuisine, quite often it will be possible to find several different cultural influences in the culinary offer of one and the same eatery.

As far as eating is concerned, Kingston, Jamaica resembles other popular destinations. Though few restaurants are vegetarian-only, most establishments will await their vegetarian customers with delicious meals.

Among the restaurants addressing only the above mentioned category of diners, the Eden Vegetarian Restaurant and the Livity Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurant are two of the best choices.

The former, residing at 13 Constant Spring Road, is open every day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Its menu features a wide range of vegetarian fares, both for eating there and for take-out. Having a reputation for its hearty and tasty meals, the restaurant will provide an unforgettable dining experience, with its dishes bearing the influence of local produce and traditions. You might want to stop by the on-site grocery before you leave. Don't miss the chance to try the restaurant's acclaimed whole grain breads, as well as other vegetarian and health foods you will find there.

The latter, located at 166 1/2 Old Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica, presents an even more traditional-flavoured menu. The local vegetables and spices are combined into delicious meals in the hands of the talented and imaginative chef. With meals truly worthy of the term culinary art, this eatery should not be left out of your dining route.

Moving on to restaurants that serve other kinds of food as well, Velisa's Gourmet Whole Food Restaurant is worth mentioning. Priding itself on its exquisite wines and superb juice bar and using many organically grown ingredients for the dishes, this restaurant has every chance of becoming one of your favourites.

Strapples is of the same category: while it offers meat-based meals as well, you will find its vegetarian menu quite delicious. It is open daily, between 11:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Sundays.

A general hint for those in search of vegetarian meals is that an Indian restaurant is likely to serve such dishes, since much of the Indian cuisine is based on fruits and vegetables. Recognized as the best Indian restaurant in Kingston, Akbar is open every day from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. You can dine in one of the four rooms or in the beautiful garden and enjoy some traditional Indian fares, usually accompanied by basmati rice and flat Indian bread.

It is obvious that vegetarians have every chance of falling in love with the culinary side of Kingston. Just don't forget that the city has other attractions as well. Something to do between meals, that is.
