What turns most people off from caring for real pets is the fact that they need cleaning up after. People just hate having to handle the waste of pets and who can blame them? By getting a virtual internet pet, a person can actually get a pet which leaves no actual mess behind.
Another pro is the fact that virtual internet pets can actually be turned off. This means that people don't have to manage their time around them. In the world today, people need every bit of time they can get in order to ensure their success. Because of this, people think that getting an actual pet can be a bit of a bother. The time required to take care of a pet may seem to be too much for some people who don't want to waste any of their work time.
However, every person needs a bit of enjoyment once in a while. Even the illusion of forming a bond with another living creature can be enough to help someone cope with the hardships that he or she must face daily. A virtual internet pet provides such an illusion.
The best thing that a person can say about a virtual internet pet is the fact that, unlike other pets, it does not take much to understand your pet. A virtual internet pet's gestures or expressions are easy to understand and its needs can be met easily. The same cannot be said for real pets.
Cons:
There are, of course, certain disadvantages to owning a virtual internet pet. The biggest disadvantage, of course is the fact that a virtual internet pet isn't exactly the type of pet which can truly return your affection. Sure, the illusion may be quite convincing, but deep within you, you know what's real and what's not. Because of this, your experience with a virtual internet pet will not actually be as fulfilling as having a real pet. No matter how close something can become to the real thing, it will never actually become the real thing, right?
The other disadvantage to picking a virtual internet pet is that it still does require you to invest your time. Even though you may be able to turn it off at your will, you still need to take care of it from time to time. In fact, there's a danger to a virtual internet pet that's not found in a real pet: Since the virtual internet pet gives one the impression that it can be turned off anytime, people are lured into a false sense of security and not even realize that they have become addicted to playing with their virtual internet pets. As a result of this, they end up actually mismanaging their time.
