VoIP: Customization And Flexibility

VoIP is getting so many reviews these days, that more and more businesses and quite a number of homeowners are deciding to make the switch and benefit from the advantages this technology has to offer. This article contains a few practical tips to help you make sure you are choosing the best option.

Once you’ve decided that VoIP is the thing for you, the first thing you need to do is to choose a provider and a type of service. That will require a bit of research, since providers vary not only in price, but also in the service plans they can offer you. Basically, VoIP plans are divided into residential and business. The latter type further spreads out into a variety of service combinations that suit different kinds of businesses according to their size and field of activity. What you should do is check a few websites for an overview of the services you can expect, and then decide which ones you need. After that, you can proceed to a more in-depth analysis of specific providers and their plans.

If you decide on a residential plan – that is, one for a home user and not an enterprise –, you should pay attention to such features as the number of calling minutes included in your monthly fee (there are even unlimited calling plans), whether or not the provider is including the equipment you’ll need, and what other amenities you can enjoy integrated in your VoIP plan. The provider will typically give you the VoIP adapter that will enable you to use your old telephone instead of a headset connected to your computer.

For a small business, the plan will probably feature additional advantages such as e-mail and faxing. Again, you should check how much calling time is included in the monthly payment, and what equipment you are getting.

In the case of larger business plans and the so-called Business-to-Business services, you can expect multiple lines, conferencing, and video applications.

As we have said, most or all of the equipment will usually be provided by the VoIP company. Your provider will be able to tell you if there’s anything you need to purchase in addition to what they are including, and whether they can sell that equipment to you or you need to look for it somewhere else. A high-speed Internet connection is a must, even though some VoIP providers will also run on dial-up. For increased audio quality and for the chance to enjoy video capabilities, however, broadband is required.

You will be free to choose the phone number you prefer – perhaps even to keep your old phone number if you want, which will enable you to be reachable from the very start. Another attractive option that some providers will give you is that of choosing a certain area code – thus you won’t necessarily have to take the code of the actual area where you live. If your friends and family live somewhere else, you can choose to have there area code and then they will be able to call you for the price of local phone calls – and they won’t have to wait till you decide to take advantage of your unlimited calling plan and give them a call.

VoIP actually comes in a bundle that includes many other features as well. Some examples would be voicemail, caller ID, 3-way calling, call forwarding, call block, and many others. These features are especially attractive for companies whose employees need to stay mobile, as they will be able to answer their calls, voicemails, and e-mail anywhere they go. You can easily adjust the settings of these features and monitor them via an Internet control panel. Talk with your service provider to see what services their plans include.

Finally, remember that VoIP is supposed to add flexibility to your telecommunications. That means you can find service plans that cater to your needs, enabling you to cut costs, increase quality and comfort, and not be location-bound. All you have to do is look for them.
