Some Ways to Use VoIP

Since VoIP is different from standard telephony, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to us that our old telephone, however sophisticated it may be, will not work with this new technology. VoIP makes telecommunication possible by transmitting voice in the form of data packets over the Internet. More and more users, individuals and businesses alike, are becoming aware of the benefits of VoIP and signing up for an account. The high quality offered by the service, along with many attractive (and free) features, plus such amenities as very low-cost or even free long distance calls are among the main attractions of VoIP.

Although your standard telephone alone won’t work with this technology, VoIP is quite versatile. You’ll need a high-speed Internet connection first, and then you can make VoIP calls with either a computer and a connected headset, a standard phone connected to a VoIP adapter, or a VoIP phone.

You’ll most likely be using your computer if you want to communicate via one of the instant messaging programs available for free on the Internet. Such programs as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Instant Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, and others have voice chat capabilities built on VoIP technology. You’ll be able to make free calls from your computer to another computer if you have a microphone and speakers or a headset.

If you still prefer to use your own phone, you can enable it to function on the VoIP network with the help of a VoIP adapter. It’s not difficult to install, you won’t need a specialist to do it. Normally, once your VoIP service is installed, you should connect the adapter to your modem and to your phone while your computer is turned off. When you turn everything back on, your phone will make the acquaintance of VoIP.

If you don’t want so many devices in your home, you can buy a VoIP phone, which will not require any additional adapters. It looks like a regular phone and it can be either corded or cordless. It is also equipped to handle such features as speed dialling, call waiting, call transfer, and so on. It will typically also have programmable keys for menu, volume, speaker mode, call transfer, etc.

There are also a two-line VoIP phone. It is ideal for a home office or a small business and it supports such features as 3-way calling, phone-to-phone, phone-to-PC, or phone-to-gateway direct dialling.

Apart from corded and cordless phones, VoIP has its own mobile telephony. It’s called VoWiFi – voice over wireless fidelity – and it allows you to use VoIP wherever there is wireless Internet access. The cost is much lower than with a cellular phone – even if you’re in another country, because with VoIP there are no roaming charges. Your phone will automatically pick up signal for free, once you are in the range of a wireless hotspot. The disadvantage, however, is that you won’t be able to use it outside a hotspot (whose typical range is around 90m).

Hybrid phones come to solve the problem mentioned above. These smart devices can operate on both the VoIP and the cellular networks. As soon as it detects a wireless access point, such a phone will function as a VoWiFi device, making it possible for you to enjoy the low calling costs of VoIP. Once you are out of the hotspot, the phone will switch to the cellular network, thus ensuring that your reachability is not affected.

However you choose to use VoIP – computer with headset, regular phone with VoIP adapter or VoIP phone –, you will definitely appreciate the great benefits this technology has to offer. Moreover, given its evolution so far, we can be sure that it will advance even further and it will change the way we communicate.
